一、同義重復表達錯誤
在標準英文寫作中，主要強調文章用詞和用句的簡潔，一般來說，同義詞或短語不能同時出現在同一個句中，否則就是同義重復表達錯誤。這部分題型在寫作風格的考題中占很大比例，一旦掌握規律，很容易得分。
誤：It never seemed like a chore: I loved the feel of the cool, moist earth and the smells, colors, and scentsof the growing carrots, eggplants, cauliflowers, bell peppers, and tomatoes.
正：It never seemed like a chore: I loved the feel of the cool, moist earth and the colors and scents of the growing carrots, eggplants, cauliflowers, bell peppers, and tomatoes.
它永遠不會是無聊的工作:我喜歡潮濕土地的涼涼的觸感，喜歡正在生長的胡蘿卜、前子、花椰菜、柿子椒還有西紅柿的氣味，顏色和氣味。解析:smell和scent是同義詞，都有“氣味”的含義，這就是典型的 redundancy的錯誤，同義詞同時出現在同一個句中，改正的方式就是保留一個即可。
二、詞義替換
此類題型很好辨別，通常題干中會出現Alternative或是LEAST acceptable等字樣，而且在此類題的選項中一般不會出現NO CHANGE的選項。做此題型的關鍵:一是細讀題干，明確題干要求是選用可以替換劃線部分的詞或短語，還是不可以替換的詞或短語;二是分析文章中對應的劃線部分的組成，弄清楚劃線部分的詞性，在句中充當的成分以及含義和時態等; 三是快速替換，將所選答案置于句中看是否滿足題干要求。
例：The Mendoza family made their living working alternately as field hands and as touring musicians.
Which of the following alternatives to the underlined portion would NOT be acceptable?
A. earned their living by B. made their living from
C. made their living on D. earned their living
解析：題干中要求的是不能被接受的，也就是說正確答案應該是和劃線部分表達的意思不同的選項。make one’s living(from)和 earn one’s living (by)都表示“維持生活”的意思。但選項C中made one’s living on working中的介詞on用在這里是錯誤的，沒有此種搭配。
注：這類題型要仔細回答，首先看題目是要替換還是不替換，再是看選項中的區別，慎重選擇。
三、確定文章基調
確定文章基調的題型要建立在對整個段落、甚至整篇文章的理解基礎之上，所以相對來說得分比較困難。解答這類題型的時候，在閱讀的過程中就要關注作者在敘事的過程中使用的是第幾人稱，第一人稱、第二人稱還是其他人稱，用什么樣的口吻敘事，是批判的、幽默的還是二者相結合的;是否和上文敘述有關聯等。此類題型，有時會有長題干長選項出現，通常都是難度較大的題，有時沒有長題干，就是文章中的劃線部分對應四個選項，中等難度。
例：At the end of the year, Ligia went home to Colombia. This year I’m busy with senior activities and with a part-time job. I’m trying to save enough to go and see my new sister next year.
Which of the following true sentences, if inserted here，would best conclude the essay as well as maintain the positive tone established earlier in the essay?
A.I’m afraid of flying, but I think I’ll be OK.
B.I’m eager to eventually join the workforce full time.
C.I’ve been practicing my Spanish——and my dance steps.
D.Senior activities are a lot of fun.
解析：劃線部分要求的是積極的基調，在前面的文章中提到Ligia教“我”講西班牙語和跳哥倫比亞舞蹈，而且在題干中有提到“我”明年要去看望Ligia,所以“我”才會想要一直練習西班牙語和舞步，這和文章前面的敘述是完全吻合的，所以正確答案是選項C。所以這個選項是又積極，又和前面的文章有聯系的。
